The world of food writing is actually very similar to the art of making the dishes themselves – both involve discipline, creativity and plenty of flavour. And just like the globe’s finest chefs, if you want to be the best, you’ll need a few secret ingredients.

That’s where the Australian Writers’ Centre can help. You see, writing about food is one thing, but turning it into a paid pursuit is all about knowing how to chop, dice, mix and blend your way to communication that crackles, sentences that sizzle, and messages that melt in your mouth.

Step up to the plate

During this two-day course, you’ll learn how to translate a mouth-watering meal into an equally delicious paragraph. Your reader can’t be there with you in the kitchen or restaurant, but your job is to make them feel as though they are. And when you’re done with the creating, we will show you how to plate up your articles to catch the eye of editors and readers alike.

Your instructor is experienced freelance food writer Carli Ratcliff, whose writing appears frequently in newspapers, magazines, food guides and websites including The Sydney Morning Herald’s Good Food Guide, SBS Food and TheRamblingEpicure.com. With Carli’s guidance, you’ll get a feel for the industry and how to tickle its tastebuds.

Here’s what you’ll learn:

  • How to communicate the “flavour wheel” to audiences with varying tastes.
  • Structuring your articles so they don’t collapse like a bad soufflé.
  • How to write riveting food reviews (without a single cravat in sight…).
  • The ingredients and method to writing great recipes.

  • How to combine your love of food with a taste for travel.

  • How to bring your food writing career to the boil – either as a full-time gig or profitable hobby.
