MEET, GREET AND TWEET
Getting even MORE out of the Australian Writers’ Centre!
A supportive and dynamic writing community - that’s what we are. And like any good community, we want to keep sharing and growing with you as you develop your skills and experiences.
One piece of feedback we continually hear from students is that they LOVE the sense of camaraderie in our courses with fellow students and tutors who share their passion. Because let’s face it, writing is a fairly solitary pursuit and as such, can be a lonely road at times. So while we regrettably cannot offer courses that go on forever, we do provide some great ways to keep the momentum – and motivation – going…
Facebook forums
When you first join a graduate forum, a couple of emotions may hit you. Firstly: “THIS is exactly what I need to keep me motivated!” and secondly: “finally, Facebook is useful for something other than random friends’ baby pictures…”
These forums are a fantastic way to stay connected with like-minded people. Each private group is the perfect meeting place to ask questions, share your successes, rejections, seek advice and offer suggestions. You can even post your own writing and get feedback on it (plus do the same for others!).
To access the forum you simply need to be a graduate of either Creative Writing, Writing Books for Children and Young Adults, Writing Picture Books, Travel Writing or Magazine and Newspaper Writing – in our online or classroom courses. (If you are already a graduate and want in, just follow the links, request to join and you'll be approved within three days.)
We may all have different writing styles and different goals when it comes to writing, but there are also SO MANY things we share as writers. These forums are an exciting way to connect and celebrate your writing achievements as you continue your journey!
Meetups
If you like meeting in real life, our ‘meetups’ are a brilliant way of bringing graduates together for an informal catch up and tune-up on that month’s chosen topic, which is usually about writing or publishing.
More than just a chat about apostrophes and rejection letters, these meetups put faces to names, names to genres and can even lead to fantastic collaborations. Plus we bring along a guest speaker – examples include agents, publishers and authors – to discuss their corner of the writing world and answer any questions you may have (there’s always plenty!).
These meetups offer invaluable knowledge and insights for attendees. As well as being open to our graduates, we also welcome anyone who is interested in seeing what this whole writing nonsense is all about! To get the gist, take a look at our recent meetups below and stay tuned for the next one via our newsletter or via the Facebook group.
