Hone your feature writing skills

Magazine and Newspaper Writing Stage 2 is ideal if you want to hone your feature writing skills and fully utilise the tools of the trade as a professional journalist.

It’s available to students who have already completed Magazine and Newspaper Writing Stage 1 at the Australian Writers' Centre – either online or face-to-face. This is a pre-requisite.

Magazine and Newspaper Writing Stage 2 is a practical course that will ensure you understand the role of a journalist and will give you more confidence that you are following the right conventions and ethics. This course is essential if you want to build on what you have already learnt in the first course.

Here's what you'll learn:

  • Finding the angle an editor wants
  • How to attribute quotes correctly
  • Advanced interviewing techniques
  • How to create balance in your stories
  • Nailing the all-important lead for your feature
  • Where to find hard-to-get sources for your story
  • Ethics and protocols in journalism
  • Facing journalistic dilemmas (there are more than you think!)
  • Dealing with editors in the real world
  • Other publishing conventions which are vital if you are serious about honing your feature writing skills
  • and MUCH more.

To keep you motivated and so you can continue workshopping, we’ll also provide you free access to an exclusive writing forum. This will help you keep your writing momentum going in a supportive environment – it’s a safe place you can get feedback on your writing.

“I have even more confidence now. I did Magazine Writing Stage 2 straight after Stage 1 and it really helped me stay focused and motivated – as I'm now freelancing as my career. I even had two features accepted during the course – I was feeling so confident I just went ahead and pitched. One of the editors got back to me to accept my pitch about 15 minutes after I sent the email. I couldn't have dreamed of that sort of result without completing the course!”
