Sometimes when you can’t find what you want, you build it. And that’s exactly how our story began.
A celebration of writing
When Valerie Khoo (pictured left) founded the Australian Writers’ Centre in Sydney back in 2005, it was a response to her earlier experiences as a ‘wannabe writer’. You see, when she’d first changed careers in the ’90s to pursue writing for a living, she had seriously struggled to find anywhere that could satisfy her thirst for specific writing knowledge, or that offered her the practical skills and confidence to succeed in the big bad writing world.
Luckily for us, Valerie is a rare breed who managed to achieve success regardless. Yet as an accomplished writer, she still saw a need for a place where budding writers could go to receive training, get support and gain confidence, all under the one roof. A dynamic community that embraced the simple pleasure of penning a personal memoir or the thrill of giving up the day job to chase a new dream career. A place that truly, unquestionably, celebrated writing. And so, our Writers’ Centre was born!
Thinking big
What began in Sydney has now expanded to include classroom training in Melbourne as well as a range of online courses giving anyone from Kalgoorlie to Katoomba, Darwin to Devonport the chance to learn high quality content from highly qualified presenters.
The Australian Writers’ Centre now offers more than 40 courses across the entire spectrum of writing, bringing eager writers and passionate teachers together to great effect. Our student success stories stretch out the door and round the corner – both inspiring and overwhelming. It’s a reflection of the quality content and winning formula that has made us Australia’s leading centre for writing training.
As we expand to include more locations in Australia, we continue to stay true to Valerie’s original vision – a resource for people who want to write confidently, get published and become successful writers. Thousands have now graduated from around the country and around the world - places such as UK, US, Afghanistan, Italy, Hong Kong, Singapore, The Netherlands, France, the Ivory Coast and more.
