It's a big world out there!

Ahhh, just imagine it. Lying on an exotic beach, glass of something cool in your hand, notebook in the other; waves gently lapping at your toes. Your hotel and flights have all been paid for and you just need to bash out 800 words and you can go for that massage...

No, wait. It’s New York in autumn. The colours of the trees in Central Park are ridiculous and you’re clip-clopping your way beneath a 360 degree cityscape, scribbling notes while the horse carriage driver chats and you munch on a pretzel.

Scratch that. Outback with a backpack. The red earth, friendly locals, camel races and 101 ways to get lost while finding yourself at the same time. The only thing more prolific than the flies are the adjectives to describe what will eventually be an epic story...

The variety. The freedom. The WORLD. That’s certainly the DREAM of being a travel writer – and one of the reasons why it constantly pops up in lists of “dream jobs”. Travel writing allows you to generate an income from sharing your experiences near or far. An article may be about a city, resort, trek, cruise or safari – or about local things such as a new hipster cafe scene or scenic walks in your area. The options are endless.

Once the realm of only the hardiest souls or well-entrenched writers, these days it’s the world of freelancers with different viewpoints and experiences – tapping into all four corners of the planet (and the non-pointy bits in between).

"I learnt more from Travel Writing than I did completing an 18-month online travel writing course elsewhere… If you are interested in travel writing, this is the best course to do."

- Glenn Marshall

Where you're at right now:

  • “I love to visit new places”
  • “I’m a naturally curious person”
  • “Writing is one of my favourite things to do”
  • “I believe in finding something different in a destination”
  • “I’d love to get paid for discovering new spots and meeting new people”

You’re at a stage where an Instagram pic or a Facebook post isn’t fully quenching your thirst to share your local or overseas travels. You’d love to write an article that appears in The Australian, The Qantas Magazine, Conde Nast Traveller or your favourite publication – and to get paid for it.

However, it can be a competitive industry, with editors inundated with stories from would-be travel writers every day. After all, just because you had an amazing time on a trip, that doesn’t guarantee an editor will want to publish your story. Many people want to earn money from writing travel articles, but only those who learn the exact steps on how to do it can actually succeed. That’s where our Travel Writing course is just the ticket...

"I was gripped from the first lesson and really enjoyed hearing of the presenter’s stories and experience in the industry. The course content is exceptional and covers all aspects of travel writing."

- Krystal Davidson

What you'll learn in this course...

This course will teach you how to research, gather, write and sell travel articles about any place on the planet – from the next suburb to the next continent.

You'll discover how to:

  • identify different types of travel articles and where to publish them
  • develop the perfect angle for your travel story that editors will love
  • structure your stories so readers love them
  • use photos, trip notes and itineraries like a pro
  • research your stories and track down winning interview subjects while on the road
  • turn your home town into a series of money-making travel articles
  • speak the industry language so you don’t sound like a newbie
  • create the perfect pitch of your story or trip to potential editors – and whether to do this before OR after you complete your travel
  • AND MUCH MORE!

This course consists of FIVE modules:

1: Understand the market and where you can get published
Where can you publish travel articles? How do publications differ in what they look for? There are many ways to write about a destination, and you’ll learn how to structure your stories to suit your readers and use the right ‘lingo’ with editors.

2: Getting your hook and story angles right
To be a well-oiled machine, it’s important to get the nuts and bolts right. You’ll explore the balance between your trip and your article – including when to do your research and the reality of how long it can take to get published. You’ll also start thinking about destinations in terms of hooks and angles and other aspects such as photography.

3: The ideal way to travel as a writer – and how to do it
There are FOUR main ways in which travel writers will organise their trips. We’ll discuss the pros and cons of all of these methods – from solo travel, to groups, as well as step-by-step guides to arranging trips that are funded by resorts, tourism bodies or airlines!

4: How to make your travel writing shine
The biggest mistake is in thinking a more exotic location will mean a better story. You’ll learn how to make even articles about your local neighbourhood compelling with some simple tools and techniques to follow. You’ll also receive a vital checklist of items to ensure you’ve nailed everything before sending your story to an editor.

5: The exact way to pitch your article to editors
The ultimate goal of your trip is to sell your story. This module will teach you about approaching editors, tips on maximising your success and the actual process of getting paid. You’ll also learn how to turn one trip into multiple stories, expanding your earning potential overnight!

"The course was full of very practical information.

It took the 'glamour' out of travel writing but this was a good thing in that the information provided now makes travel writing a real possibility as a career option!"

By the end of this course...

This course will give you a blueprint to becoming a successful travel writer. You will learn how to organise your trips and become more efficient in your research and writing. You’ll be armed with everything you need to wow editors and start earning money immediately as a travel writer – including industry tips, templates and step-by-step instructions to fast track your knowledge.

The great thing about being a travel writer is that it’s as flexible as you are. You don’t need to “quit your day job” or be on the road all the time – in fact, plenty of our graduates have been successful (and award-winning) by fitting travel writing in with their full-time jobs.

With the right attitude and the right knowledge, you CAN travel far (pun definitely intended) in the industry. The best travel writers can turn a trip to the post office into an adventure for the ages. The principles of good travel writing – and how to approach editors – apply to almost every publication in the English-speaking world. So what are you waiting for?
