About the book

“In Paris … I’ve understood most of life is constructed in the mind. Paris was always an imagined place and living there was always going to feel imaginary.”

Part philosophy/part memoir, Ransacking Paris is the evocative and deftly woven story of a writer’s inner journey through the heart of Paris.

With children recently flown the nest, award-winning author Patti Miller decides to fulfil a life-long dream of living in France for a year with her partner. This is no typical wanderlust tale, and is as much an exploration of the self as of Paris.

Patti Miller grew up in the hot bush and scrub of Wiradjuri country, a poor farm girl whose basic school French lessons introduced her to an imagined better life. Years later, into the looking glass she steps and, with Montaigne, Rousseau and De Beauvoir as companions, Patti has conversations with dead philosophers in Parisian cafes. She joins a choir, studies the symbolism of bees, works on a book and examines a life in transition.

Ransacking Paris is a book to nourish the soul, filled with epiphany, lyrical prose and candid insight. Above all it speaks of our humanity – our interconnectedness, our desires, our frailties and our implicit differences.

Destined to be hailed as one of the most beloved books of the year, Ransacking Paris is Patti Miller’s seventh book and confirms Patti Miller as one of Australia’s finest literary voices.
