"I got published!": Rebecca Curtin

We love hearing from our students no matter what they have to say, but when we hear of a student being published, we just want to shout it from the rooftops! We’re a little scared of heights, so we’ll go with a blog post instead.

Rebecca says:

I completed Magazine and Newspaper Writing Stage 1 last year and then two months later we, as a family of five, found ourselves in Shanghai as a result of my husband's work. Putting my new skills into practice, I pitched to multiple expat publications but with no success.

Then, one of the women who I had pitched to, who was an editor at Shanghai Family magazine, contacted me and told me she was repatriating to Australia and that I should apply for her job. Based on my initial pitches, a mock article I had to write as part of the interview process and my knowledge gained throughout the course, I got the job. So now I am the Web & Magazine Editor for Shanghai Family magazine!

My first published pieces will be in the April edition – a travel piece about Depot Beach NSW and an article about how children maintain their mother tongue here in Shanghai (when it's not Mandarin or English). Here's the link to the site:  Check me out in the ‘meet our writers' section. Shanghai is very much a city where you can completely reinvent yourself, it's all about who you know and opportunities that you would never dream of in Australia are abundant. However, I couldn't have done it without the skills learnt from the AWC course. Thank you!

Congratulations Rebecca! Wanna see what she's in charge of? Check it out here!
