What’s it like to learn with AWC?
Each year, thousands of students just like you achieve their writing goals through our courses and world-class presenters. Here they share how their new-found skills and confidence enriched their life.
I already love writing but I really loved this course. I knew that the Australian Writers' Centre has a great reputation by looking at their website. And they really lived up to their reputation. Teachers were professional in delivering their feedback.
Amy provided professional and constructive feedback.
I enjoyed the opportunity to write and discuss my book ideas.
I write my novels better now. The quality of writing is better. And I'm looking into publishing my books.
I recommend this course to other people if they are writing a book and trying to get it published. If they are stuck for ideas or simply would like to accomplish the goal of writing something worth reading on bookshelves.
Great course!

Excellent videos and information and great video feedback. I now know how to rewrite my opening page.
Great courses and good value for the money.
I am excited that I now have a structured plan to work with to start and progress my initial writing.
I now have a blueprint to use to structure my story and actually write consistently, rather than just writing a story without knowing where it is going.
There is more to figure out before starting the actual writing than I first thought but that will work in your favour.
Good courses which teach practical and useable knowledge for your writing.
All of Nat's feedback (as it was in Personal Storytelling and Memoir Writing) was both positive, and helpful where advice was needed. That advice was given clearly and comprehensively. I appreciated everything: she is an articulate, thoughtful tutor.
I enjoyed the writing and encouragement to continue my story as the course progressed.
I understand structure so much better and this is already shaping how I can continue my story.
Do it: you'll learn so much in a supportive on line classroom.
I wanted the tools to get my writing underway, stop my procrastination!
Some great tips, book and apps that can help along the way. Also what published writers do and what works for them, such a variety of useful tips. It's brilliant. All the information was great. I thought it stayed on topic and was a short course to give me some inspiration.
It makes me think I can do this, it's a doable thing. Writing a novel I've always wanted to write. It's just the motivation I need.
I began writing my manuscript through Novel Writing Essentials, and in completion, formed a workshop group with the fellow students. From there, as my novel grew, I decided to complete the next course in order to receive professional feedback on my manuscript.
Nat is encouraging and motivating in her feedback, but also knows how to frame her advice in a way that hits the nail on the head in terms of areas needing improvement. She always made time to answer my questions in a neutral and supportive manner, and I felt my skill grow markedly under her tutelage.
I enjoyed writing for others, having my work read and others telling me what they loved about it. The critique sometimes was hard, but in the end I learned to embrace it, and appreciate the opportunity to test it against fresh eyes in order to make my story better.
I completed my manuscript. Workshopping is invaluable. I grew so much as a writer because of it, and I found something just “clicked” at the end of reading through the manuscripts. My understanding of writing characters with deep third person interiority has levelled up ten fold.
As above, my aha moment was realising that I wasn't writing my characters through their eyes, but from a camera position close to, or just above their head. I have learned to thread the story through the characters, thinking about what does this character think, see, feel, in this moment. It's a skill that took some honing, but I feel by the end of the course, I really got the knack of it.
Easy to access, you get to meet an online network of fellow writers, some of whom may become life long friends. The course is thorough and well paced, the worksheets are excellent and communication is clear.
I can't speak highly enough of Nat. Sharing your work is such a vulnerable, exposing, terrifying process and she just has a way of being plain spoken in her feedback, so that her writing lesson is constructive, but also completely non judgemental and encouraging.
I enjoyed writing the assignments. Taught me so much more about writing and some good advice on getting me writing my novel.
Loved Nat, great feedback and encouraging.
Great course if you are serious about writing.

Both tutors have a beautiful, infectious enthusiasm. The content was straightforward and easy to understand, which made learning pleasurable and easy.
Bernadette's feedback was clear, well-focused, and helped me understand exactly what to do next. Honestly, she has provided the most useful feedback I have ever received, as it went to the heart of a problem with my prologue that I have been trying to solve for years. Thank you, thank you.
I will recommend it to others! Well worth the time and money.
My overall impression was very positive. The feedback was thoughtful, encouraging and, most importantly, specific. Rather than just pointing out what worked or didn't work, our tutor explained why, which helped me understand how to improve my writing and what to avoid. I always finished each assignment feeling motivated to write the next one.
I enjoyed how naturally the course got me writing again. Ideas that had been sitting in my head for years finally found a home. Characters came to life, stories started taking shape, and before I realised it, I had written far more than I thought I was capable of. It never felt forced. It just felt like I had rediscovered something I had been missing.
I am writing again, and I find myself thinking about stories all the time. My characters are coming to life, and I've finally understood concepts like structure and plot that were just words to me before.
My biggest 'aha!' moment was learning to step back and ask, "What is this adding to the story?" I always knew how to write, but I used to write things that didn't really move the story forward. Now, I reread my work several times and cut far more than I add. If I start with 700 words, I'm now able to bring it down to 500 without losing the story. I don't delete the lines I remove either. I keep them on another page and come back to them later if I think they might fit somewhere else.
Go for it! It's worth the investment.
Mark was a positive and supportive tutor. The overall course was interesting and informative.
I believe the course has equipped me to begin a journey in copywriting!
I would recommend the AWC due to its structured content, the ease of learning, and the accessibility of the weekly tasks.
I love the structure of the templates broken down into the different angles.
The course has given me confidence to write content for my own website I am designing and to share wider.
There are so many different options now for freelance content writers.
Love the AWC courses and the way they are structured. Easy to understand, lots of guidance and a wealth of lived experience.
I enjoyed learning all the aspects that go into a story. The tutor understood the assignments and gave good advice on improving and modifying my writing.
I was inspired many times on where my novel would go and inspired to write more. I also learnt many ways to improve and edit my novel giving me more confidence to continue writing in the future.
Everyone has their own unique stories to tell. If I don't write what inspires me, no one else will as no one else thinks like I do.
Great course to learn about writing, very inspirational and supportive environment.
The learning program was fun because it had a lot of meat. I will never read a book or watch a movie in the same manner. It will take some time and effort to put all we learned into practice.
Nat's feedback and observations were always helpful and helped improve my writing. Her videos are fun to listen to.
I enjoyed the abundance of information and suggestions. The feedback from some of the other students.
Before the course, my writing was 90% tell; now I am getting better at showing. I have been struggling with structure, and the course helped me to see a way forward.
The AWC courses are an ideal combination between self-paced learning and at the same time being part of a class with tutor and accountability.
Our tutor was very well-versed in copywriting and teaching. His feedback on assignments was also very useful and to the point.
The assignments were fun and interesting. The lessons were well-explained without being too wordy.
It helped to cement previously learned material, summarise and revise it, and provide additional practice with it, and also to see how different approaches can lead to similar results. It was a good confidence builder too.
I've always loved writing, but have never received feedback on my own writing and have struggled to find a writing community. The process of writing a novel has always been a goal, but I wanted to put myself out there first, and this was the logical first step. The weekly assignments and online material made it easy to balance with my work commitments.
I enjoyed the writing prompts from the modules and thinking through a different lens, other than my own understanding of writing and storytelling. The websites and modules were easy and simple to navigate.
I appreciated Amy's feedback and her thorough review of the assessments and breakdown of what to expect in the world of publishing. It was insightful. The community she created was also positive and encouraged feedback.
I have more confidence in myself, and it was a good reminder to get back to the basics of writing and storytelling and apply it to my current story that I am working on. It also reminds me that the possibilities are endless and that anyone can pursue their writing goals at any time and stage in life.
I would definitely recommend giving it a go for something different and learning the art of storytelling.
I've been using Scrivener for years, so I already knew a lot of the content that was covered. That said, because Scrivener is such a vast program, I found that listening to the videos that went over what I already knew exposed me to some things I DIDN'T know.
I appreciated Natasha using her manuscripts as an example because it gave me ideas on how I can lay mine out in Scrivener.
I now have a better idea of how I can organise my manuscript in Scrivener. There were elements of Scrivener that I barely use, like using photos, that I now have a better understanding of how I can use them and how I can draw those photos into my scene file so I'm not flicking back and forth. I didn't know that I could import a website (what a game-changer!). I liked that Natasha went through the corkboard, because that's one element of Scrivener I always avoided because I wasn't really sure how to use it.
I like that AWC has industry professionals leading courses, who aren't afraid to showcase their own work and share their own 'secrets' and ways of working.
I though Nat was great. I listened to the feedback for everyone's work and found her insights helpful.
It encouraged me so much so that I have started writing a novel and already have written 8000 words. The feedback from the course and from listening to the podcast of "just write" is what I'm trying to do. I really enjoy creating the characters - they are like my own people.
It just helped me feel more confident to start and try writing. I have redone a couple of the modules once I went over my notes if things were not clear.
The course gives a complete learning of everything you need to get started in your writing journey.
This is the first new activity I have tried that I really feel like I will keep working on as I loved it so much. I'm listening to podcasts daily and following lots of literacy focused pages on Instagram.
I enjoyed the video lessons. I thought them well explained and the short story examples were very useful.
It spurred me on to write and enter a competition that I would otherwise I would not have done. That gave a nice sense of achievement.
A well-structured course with interesting content, that provided a framework for me to focus and achieve a goal.
The course information was eye opening and took you right into the nitty gritty of the publishing world. It was both positive and realistic. Everything that you would need to know right through to the end and beyond. Valerie Khoo presented the course with pleasant enthusiasm.
I enjoyed learning how the whole publishing world works, from agents, publishers and editing teams. And that they want the best outcome for your book, and they love it just like you do.
I'm much more knowledgeable than when I began the course. I entered my manuscript in a competition before completing the course. Although unsuccessful, I am better equipped since completing the course to continue my journey.
If you want to learn more extensively about writing do not hesitate to do one of the many courses AWC have on offer.
I've been writing my novel for seven years and wanted more insight into structural plotting. I found writing a synopsis difficult and Kate's course outline included guidance into writing one. Kate Forsyth is one of my favourite authors and a respected and successful artist that I can relate to.
Kate packs in a lot of beneficial and creative information.
I enjoyed learning about various story arcs and pyramids that can be used to plot your story line.
I was able to finish my novel.
The Australian Writers' Centre is a respectable community for writers to gain insight and learn from other writers in a safe and creative atmosphere. They have so much to offer with courses, podcasts and newsletters.
