What’s it like to learn with AWC?

I loved listening to Kate - she is insightful and positive. Each time I listened to a session, I came out feeling positive and hopeful.

I'm struggling with self-doubt at the moment and work as a freelance finance writer. Listening to Kate has reminded me of what I love about writing and reawakened me to the possibilities I used to dream about.

I found the lessons and activities very informative, and the feedback was timely and constructive. I really liked the video feedback where not only your work was discussed but everyone else in the class.

I enjoyed the activities. These were focused and provided the opportunity to practice the lessons taught. They also provided an opportunity to step outside your comfort zone and concentrate on one particular skill/area.

Understanding the major parts of writing, plot, theme and structure has helped me structure my writing better. It has also helped identify my theme rather than just think about the characters. There needs to be a reason they are doing something or not doing something. That reason needs to be tangible and for them to accept another way will require a profound change in their thinking and/or beliefs.

For beginner writers or writers that have never really understood how to turn their writing into a well-structured story, regardless of length, then this is definitely the course for them.

The course gave me motivation. I realised I need to believe more in myself and have entered writing competitions.

The AWC has plenty of courses at reasonable prices, give it a go.

The materials are incredibly useful and will help me moving forward. Pamela provided so many valuable ideas and ways to consider the writing process.

Providing a clear and concise program that was easy to understand and very relatable, made it incredibly valuable, not only for the duration of the course, but for future reference.

I enjoyed listening to Pamela during the online sessions. It very much enabled me to think deeper about the process of world building and the development of something that someone may even enjoy reading!

I enjoyed learning new skills, getting good insights into the world of writing, and realising that I have much to learn but can do it.

I now see the path to writing and completing the novel that I started last year, but got stuck with.

The AWC is a professional organisation driven by passion and love for writing, that provides good support to their students.

Pamela Freeman was brilliant and was certainly the drawcard for me doing this course.

The handouts were so helpful, and being able to print them and write my key points is so good.

I have been writing this novel for over 10 years, and despite the numerous pieces of feedback, I was not progressing. Just clarifying the worlds I am writing about - real and paranormal - has been so helpful.

Nat was great. She made me laugh. Her encouragement and constructive feedback helped me improve my writing. I will keep her voice in my head as I write my memoir.

I enjoyed interacting with fellow students and Nat. And writing the assignments.

I now know I CAN make time to write, and write well. And the positive feedback I received is further encouragement that people want to hear my story.

I have always struggled with 'show, don't tell.' It was good to have a whole module on it with real examples and to practise with the assignment and feedback. Also learnt that my story matters and I'm determined to write it.

I really enjoyed studying the chapter book series currently on the market and analysing them from different perspectives throughout the course.

I now have a clear understanding of the differences between picture books and chapter books.

I have a tendency to info dump and this course was quite clear on that point. I thought it covered the subject well.

Top level sportspeople have a coach for a reason. Businesses use mentors for a reason. Universities employ tutors for a reason. Aspiring writers need AWC for a reason.

I completed the Writing Picture Books course a few years ago, but I felt I needed to take my writing skills to the next level.

I learned how to edit and polish my own stories. Writing the elevator pitch and back cover blurb before drafting the story helps me better understand the story I want to tell.

If I had discovered the Australian Writers' Centre earlier, I believe I would have reached my goal of publishing picture books much sooner.

I liked how the tutor provided feedback to each of us participants in a very clear way and gave advice on why and how to make it better.

I enjoyed the sharing of stories and the feedback.

The course and the feedback gave me confidence that I am a good writer. I just need to upgrade my skills. It brought me back to writing. I started free writing again which also encouraged me to take out my old work and start working on it again.

I would say the courses are a good place to start if you want to find your way in writing and publishing your book.

Margaret was very helpful with her feedback. I appreciate the time she took to answer and clarify any further questions I had.

I really liked the interactions with other students and reading their stories and seeing them develop.

It's helped me to build momentum with developing my story. It also gave me a positive distraction from some personal things happening, like a 5-week antidote!

AWC courses are well-structured and they're supportive and encouraging. Worth it!

The confidence Valerie held in this session made me feel confident. She spoke from her own background and made it relatable. I work within my Aboriginal community - I love my work and have a passion for writing. Valerie has changed my thought process, and now I feel confident in writing while working my day job. I have confidence in my goal setting.

I didn't believe in myself. I have so many creative thoughts running through my head. Now I have confidence to do baby steps, have attainable goals, and believe that I can write my novels.

This is the first course I have enrolled in through AWC and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm looking forward to growing through AWC courses.

If you are wanting to hear encouragement, relatable stories, and simplified strategies on how to step into the writers world, I highly recommend courses that the Australian Writers' Centre offer.

I liked the self-paced ability. I enjoyed how it went into romance specifics and helped me feel that the romance genre is not lacking.

I am more keen and eager than ever to write my book, and am now working through Creative Writing Stage 2 and feel confident about the direction my idea is going.

A good pace, achievable. Not too overwhelming. I enjoyed reading other students' work.
