Each module focuses on a different theme: Finding Inspiration, Voice, Storytelling Essentials, and Joyous Writing. Through Kate’s inspirational teaching, you’ll discover what you need to know about the art and science of storytelling.

In this self-paced video course, Kate helps you tap into your creativity with techniques she’s honed over many years. You’ll learn about voice, craft, managing time and expectations, and ways to plug into and sustain inspiration.

She’ll also guide you through a series of challenges and exercises designed to help you tap into your creative genius and unlock the stories inside you. These exercises will stimulate your intuition and imagination. The best part is that these exercises can be completed in your own time, whenever you feel ready.

As it’s a self-paced course, you won’t be sharing your private writing and will be completely liberated to nurture your personal dreams and creative desires. By the end of the course you’ll discover new ways of thinking about writing, storytelling, and creativity, and find fresh purpose and direction as you travel towards finding your voice and telling your story.

This course is different

This is a writing course quite unlike any other. All you need is a desire to write.

Maybe you haven’t written any stories since you were a child, or maybe you make your living by telling stories in one form or another. You might dream of writing just for yourself, or you might long for your words to be read by others. You can write stories about things that really happened, or things that may never happen.

All that matters is that you are willing to listen, learn, play, explore, discover and recover your joy in creativity.

This course is designed to empower you to write your own stories in your own voice, and to help you overcome the doubts, fears, and inhibitions that all creative spirits share.

You will learn to:

  • sustain inspiration over a piece of long-form creative writing
  • unleash your natural creativity
  • understand the difference between the Authorial Voice and the Narrative Voice
  • create dialogue, interior monologue and a deep point of view that rings true
  • master ‘psychic distance’ and the omniscient narrator
  • develop storytelling techniques proven in scientific enquiry
  • engage and satisfy your readers
  • build empathetic and memorable characters
  • unlock the door to your unconscious and draw on dreams and daydreams
  • release shackles imposed on your creativity by yourself and others
  • understand the healing and transformative power of storytelling
  • embrace that you are not alone in your fears
  • go forward with a new sense of joy and purpose.

It is also a great refresher for experienced writers who are struggling to move forward with an existing project.

Q: Do I need to have done any other writing courses?

A: All writers struggle with creative exhaustion, loss of motivation, anxiety and self-sabotaging behaviours – it is the cost of creativity. This course has been specifically designed to shine a light into the shadows, and help you find your way forward once more.

Q: Will I know how to write a novel by the end of it?
Dare to Dream is designed to support and amplify our novel writing courses. It aims to help you find and sustain inspiration, access the subconscious where all stories are born, understand the mechanics of storytelling and how stories connect us with other people, and give you a sense of purpose and confidence in your own voice. It does not aim to teach novel writing essentials such as character development, world building, suspense, pace, grammar or foreshadowing – but luckily we have courses in those too!

Q: Will the course help me if I’m writing a memoir?
Yes, this course will help you, regardless of whether you are writing fiction, memoir or creative non-fiction. It is designed to help you find your own voice and explore your own past, something that is crucial in memoir writing as well as in other forms of creative writing.

Q: What’s the difference between this course and Creative Writing Stage 1?
This course, Dare to Dream, is like a tonic for your inner writer. If you yearn to write but self-doubt is holding you back, it’s a great way to dip your toe in the water. It aims to build your confidence and open your mind to the pure joy of writing so you can fill your life with more of it! For this reason, it’s also an ideal course if you have the foundation skills from Creative Writing Stage 1 but want to enhance your writing practice, develop more ideas, and harness your flow.

In Creative Writing Stage 1, you’ll learn the foundation techniques for brilliant fiction – whether you wish to write short stories, novels or just for fun. It teaches you the nuts and bolts of storytelling (such as crafting characters, scenes, structure and plot) and provides you with lifelong skills for every story you write. It’s an essential course for any aspiring author.
