This course is an absolute joke

Would you love to write one of those insanely popular funny books like the Treehouse series, Tom Weekly, Diary of a Wimpy Kid or Toffle Towers but not sure if you’re funny enough? Laugh Out Loud will help you find the funny, hunt down hilarity, conjure the chuckles, seek out the silly and guarantee more guffaws than ever before!

Too funny for words?

Children love to laugh. You must know that (you used to be one). That’s why it’s really not surprising that the bestsellers lists are often jam-packed with humorous stories for kids. It’s been like this for years (trust us, we checked), because comedy is timeless and universal.

There is a problem though. You see, many authors – both emerging and established – lack the confidence to see their funny manuscripts through from conception to completion. What if nobody laughs at my ideas? What if my jokes fall flat? What if nobody understands that when I write in italics I’m thinking things out loud? You get the idea.

This course will help you find that confidence to write your own funny books – ones that kids, publishers and parents will gleefully gobble up. Because if you can laugh, you can write humour – it just takes a bit of practice.

What will I learn in this course?

Laugh Out Loud has been created by bestselling children’s author Tim Harris – and he’ll personally guide you through the process of crafting a funny story or book. It doesn’t matter whether you already have a stack of quirky ideas or not – you’ll have plenty of opportunities to limber up that funny bone along the way.

The course includes NINE video lessons, covering things like:

  • how to get started on your story, including what publishers look for
  • developing memorable characters that kids will love
  • whether you should plot out your story or wing it like a maniac
  • a wee section on ‘toilet’ humour and why kids love it so much
  • how to have fun with wordplay (like the pun in the last bullet)
  • why tricky situations are so important for a funny story
  • the proper way to approach recurring and surreal humour
  • how to edit your manuscript for an uproarious reader experience
  • industry insider tips on how to cleverly promote yourself and your book so that you laugh all the way to the bank (or at least the ATM).

Along the way, you’ll also flex your funny on exercises designed to split your reader’s sides and bring out the ‘bahahaha’s. Plus, your final assignment allows you to receive personalised video feedback from the course creator himself, Tim!

About course creator Tim Harris

Tim Harris is an award-winning children’s author with several laugh-out-loud series for kids to his name, including Toffle Towers, Mr Bambuckle’s Remarkables and Exploding Endings. He was a primary school teacher of 15 years, which kind of makes perfect sense really. His stories are filled with quirky scenarios, loveable characters and plenty of imagination. And soon, yours will be too!

How our “self-paced courses” work

This is one of AWC’s 20+ “self-paced” online courses. But what does that mean? Allow us to explain:

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: Will this course make me funny?
A: There is no guarantee. But this course will explicitly analyse humour, with plenty of opportunity for you to develop your own ‘funny’ writing style and inject laughs in all the right places (so, kind of like the opposite of Botox).

Q: Can anyone do this course?
A: Yes. But it’s especially helpful for writers who are committed to planning, starting, completing or bettering their manuscripts.

Q: Will there be homework?
A: It’s not school, but each module will include at least one recommended writing exercise to help you hone your skills.

Q: Will I receive feedback?
A: Yes! At the end of the course, you’ll have the opportunity to submit an exercise and receive personalised feedback from Tim.

Q: Does Tim like chocolate?
A: Yes, Tim is deadly serious about his love of chocolate. Thanks for asking.
