What’s it like to learn with AWC?

I have a lot of respect for the advice Charlotte gave. Also having her read the stories back gave a new perspective. What sounds good in your head might not be that good when it's read back to you.

I discovered that my strong point in writing is the way I can vividly describe things. Also a lifetime of illustrating for adults is not going to translate well for picture books.

I have always told the people around me they can become anything they want. They just have to reach out and grab it. If it means going and learning something just do it.

Impressive course content and well organized and presented.

I enjoyed the writing exercises and assignments.

I now fully understand and appreciate the skills involved in writing an appealing and industry-standard picture book... much more is involved than I thought before doing the course.

There is a wealth of information to be had from engaging with the AWC, definitely worth the investment.

I look forward to doing more courses.

I have wanted to write a novel for as long as I can remember and I am finally confident enough to ignore the opinions of others and just follow my heart and do it.

This was a really helpful course that I very much enjoyed.

When I started I felt a bit of a fraud and that that I was only a "pretend" writer. After I listened to the first lot of feedback I thought "hmmm maybe I can do this". By the last feedback session I now know I can.

I'm going to write the novel. I won't let anyone tell me I can't and the feedback was positive so I believe in myself so much more now.

There's a wealth of knowledge from such a wide range of experience presented in these courses. They are excellent value for money and the people are helpful and really care.

You should do one of AWC's courses, they teach you so many things that you won't even know you needed to know. The way it's done gives you confidence in your story and that you will be able to write it.

I was able to see where I am weak in creative writing and learned a lot about it. I learnt that I have great imagination, but I need to learn how to write properly, and especially I have a lot of work to do in POV.

The AWC is the best place to learn about creative writing and, most importantly, to have fun!

The AWC courses are designed to support you in your learning, while encouraging you to challenge yourself to become a better writer.

I was just looking for any tips for when the time comes that I'd like to try and get my books published. The course was more in depth and with practical examples then I was expecting.

I love the enthusiasm and confidence the instructor has that I will be published if I do the work needed. It has given me the confidence to try for publishing my book once it's edited sufficiently.

Every course I've done at AWC has had amazing presenters, is very factual and inspiring.

I really like the helpful downloadable sheets that I can use to focus my characterisation. Building out thorough characters and thinking through all the aspects, even if they won't be 'used' within my story. Having a full idea of who your character is makes them react to a situation in a way you perhaps wouldn't have thought - and seems more natural for them to react that way - rather than forced.

I have always 'made up stories' about random people while people watching, but now I enjoy doing that with full characterisation in mind. But also, I'm taking the time to develop my own characters in full before they embark on their murderous little journeys.

I'd definitely recommend Australian Writers' Centre (and already have) and I'd say the courses are focused, easy to manage while working and well worth the effort and cost involved.

Feedback from was great and very in-depth. It was great to see other people's assignments and learn based on the feedback given to them.

The AWC is a great source to build confidence in your writing and learn tips from experts.

I'm working on the 4th draft of a novel and planning to begin querying once I'm finished. As the opening pages of a book greatly influence an agents/publishers interest in reading on, I wanted to make my opening as strong as possible and thought this seminar could help.

I liked the way it was split into short sections which made it accessible over time as opposed to an all-in-one-go commitment.

I'm going to change the opening of my book so that it is an active scene as opposed to a cliche sitting somewhere and thinking about life.

The AWC has a myriad of self-paced courses covering everything from writing essentials to novel refinement and group workshopping.

Grant was a great tutor - and although there was a lot of information to digest, I didn't feel overwhelmed as he allowed us to work at our own speed for the exercises. I also appreciate the link to the Notion site where I can revisit the information in the future.

There was a lot I didn't know (or don't remember learning in primary school) so I actually found the whole class very valuable, and I enjoyed both sessions a lot!

Although I am not editing as such in my role, I believe this course has given me confidence with my writing and has inspired me to learn more.

I am a big fan of the podcast, which I have learned so much about writing from. This enticed me to explore the courses on offer at AWC as I became more serious about writing my novel.

I was concerned that I wouldn't find the time to commit as a mother to three young children and also perhaps the assignments wouldn't be interesting enough. These concerns turned out to be nothing to worry about.

The way that feedback was delivered was great! It really suited my learning style and I found it so useful to listen to the critique of everyone's work and not just my own.

Pamela is extremely knowledgeable and honest. Two of the most important factors when it comes to being a good teacher.

I enjoyed the writing, I loved the information and prompts provided. It wasn't too overwhelming but it was enough to help guide you.

I liked that there was a specific module on how to enrol in KDP and use KDP to distribute your book - I love that I now know how to place my eBook/book on Kindle.

I liked Mark's personalised feedback. His comments were kind and informative, and very encouraging.

The fact that copywriting is a process, and doesn't rely on inspiration.

I think confidence in my ability is the main takeaway.

I enjoyed Vivienne's style of tutoring, always clear and detailed in all the feedback.

Each module was really interesting and informative. I enjoyed the assignments as they pushed me to research and be creative. I also liked how I reworked and edited my writing to eliminate unnecessary words.

I'm really keen to write and practice everything I've learnt here until I'm ready to actually pitch something, hopefully soon!

I would say AWC courses are worthwhile as the information is valuable and easy to understand, feedback is clear and useful, connections are made with other students and the tutors are lovely, kind and knowledgeable. It's fun.

So many gems were sprinkled throughout the course and I really enjoyed the questions to ask and the worldbuilding aspect as well as the breakdown of structure, particularly over more than one book.

I enjoyed Pamela's love of the genre and the zoom sessions.

I've done a few courses now and have enjoyed all of them. There is always something more to learn or sometimes relearn with a better understanding than you had before. If you are serious about your writing, then a course is a great investment to improve your skills and hone your craft.
