What’s it like to learn with AWC?

I needed to make significant changes to a novel I have written several drafts of.

I enjoyed the way the course moved through what I needed to know in a clear and lively way.

The idea of a fugue structure - this may be the solution to the main problem with my novel, which has two storylines and two protagonists.

AWC courses give you practical advice and tools, delivered by experienced writers, editors or publishers.

I thoroughly enjoyed this course and found it one of the most useful of all the courses I have done with AWC. It released my creativity.

It shifted my story of historical fiction to historical fantasy. Once I could move it from colonised countries to made-up countries (without changing the story at all), as well as providing a fabulous introduction to world creation, I was back on track.

I have already recommended it, and a fellow AWC student enrolled in it. I told him that the world-building component of the program was fabulous (Pamela did an excellent job) and that it would help him in the genre that he likes to write in.

I was drawn to this course because it offered the flexibility of completing the modules online, as well as receiving weekly feedback.

I was extremely grateful to have had Cathie as my online tutor. Cathie's feedback helped me grow in confidence and develop the skills I need to write a picture book.

The most enjoyable aspect of the course was receiving the weekly feedback and seeing how much personal growth I had achieved over the five-week period.

Significant resources were provided for each module. The audio was also helpful, having been broken up into an easy-to-listen-to format.

My 'aha' moment was realising that I could do this, and it was essential to step outside my comfort zone and take on a new challenge.

I highly recommend the Australian Writers' Centre to any aspiring authors. They offer a great range of courses for different writing genres, and they help develop your skills and confidence as a writer.

The way the content was presented was extremely accessible. I'm an experienced writer but love doing courses because I always pick up something new or am reminded of something I've forgotten. This course did both of these things with nearly every video.

I enjoyed:

The logical progression of the content
The self-paced aspect of the course
The availability of the presenter and other participants, which increased the sense of community
The contact with other participants via Facebook group
The zoom meetings which increased personalisation.

I'm a pantser and have been looking for a way to reduce the amount of editing I need to do. I've always understood structure intellectually but have struggled to find a way to make that sort of planning work for me. I've been able to combine what I've learned in this course with beat sheets and, suddenly, it all makes sense. Of course, my pantsing nature takes over and I'm constantly editing the beat sheets, but that's a lot easier than completely changing a whole book. I'm hoping my structural edits once I'm done with this book won't be the massive multiple rewrites other books have been.

I thoroughly enjoyed this course. Each module gave me ideas and big plans. I think it's very comprehensive.

I found Louise to be really considered and thoughtful in her feedback to me and others. Her constructive approach really helped me understand how to make my writing better.

This is a great course to learn more about the technical aspects of writing while providing an opportunity to get feedback on your writing.

Bernadette was FANTASTIC! I have sat through hundreds of online courses over the years, and this was the first ever course where I have retained attention throughout each and every video module. She was extremely knowledgeable, her voice was easy to listen to and the content was perfect!

I have recently started working on the backend of our WordPress website, and the amount of knowledge regarding SEO during this course was phenomenal. I have used everything I've learnt for our current raffle ticket campaign and it has made a HUGE difference! Not only that, but having the templates for all type of copy is a fantastic source of information and something students can alter for themselves and their own businesses! I knew a lot about AI already (I also work in technology), but it really went into the nitty gritty, and I did learn a few things I wasn't privy too which was fantastic!

The SEO content blew my mind and absolutely fascinated me! I work in tech, and also have my own website, BUT it is managed via GoDaddy so I miss out on a lot of the backend knowledge. I do however manage our station website, and have access to all the bits and pieces Bernadette covered, and I can't wait to do more of a deep dive!

Fantastic course that covers everything you can think of when it comes to copy!
With loads of course material to fall back on as well as templates you can customise and use for future work.

I will need to enrol in another one of your courses - very much exceeded expectations.

I've done many courses through The Australian Writers' Centre. It's a one stop shop. Excellent courses and excellent tutors.

I'd written 20,00 words of a middle grade novel and knew that I didn't know what I was getting wrong. Having completed several very helpful AWC courses, I needed a spotlight on my actual writing and for someone to tell me what needed changing.

Not only did Margaret give me essential feedback, my writing class also provided some excellent suggestions. As a result, the manuscript has undergone fundamental changes. For the better.

Margaret was a positive provider of feedback. Her quiet, gentle manner was very supportive. However she didn't hold back on picking up my rookie mistakes and provided suggestions and guidance for the story's development. My bad habits slip in now and then, but at least now I can spot them on re-reading.

Apart from the videos and handouts which were gold, I was most excited to receive feedback from Margaret and my course mates.

It has seen me now feel that I'm a writer and will encourage me to improve my skills through writing. The goal is to be published but I'm now not naive to the industry and the immense competition from other like-minded writers. Through Nat's Words at Dawn I have found a lovely small group of people to write together through our Discord channel and are having a get together on our own writer's retreat at the end of July after the CYA Brisbane conference.

Although a generally proficient writer, I had so much to learn about my writing for a novel, a children's novel. I found that a lot of the information in the course applied broadly and could be applied in my chosen genre.

AWC? Fantastic course leaders, fantastic personnel in general. Courses will give you tools that you never knew you needed in your writing.

I really loved the content, and Pamela's love for fantasy really showed which makes her a good teacher. I also loved the exercises as they gave me so much more insight into my own story in a way that I hadn't done before.

It showed me that I instinctively knew a lot about writing a fantasy novel which gave me a lot more confidence, while at the same time, teaching me so much more than I could've imagined. I never once felt out of my depth, instead I felt encouraged and empowered in my writing.

The Australian Writers' Centre is perfect for those of us who have no formal education or training in writing. I was worried that doing a course would get in the way of my natural creativity, but instead the course enhanced it.

I have been thinking of writing my personal story since 2021. This course was the perfect fit for providing me with the relevant tools and techniques in achieving this objective.

The online lectorials were well-presented by Valerie Khoo and Nat Newman's feedback and comments on the assessment tasks were excellent.

Nat Newman is a real professional. I liked the way she dissected my assignment, provided constructive feedback and highlighted areas for improvement with examples. She found a way to encourage me using her mastery and perfect command of punctuation, sentence formation, paragraph structure and points of view. I have learned so much from her.

This course makes the writing progress easy and affordable even to those who do not believe they can write an autobiography or memoir. The assignments I had to complete every week brought me to places in my life that were obliterated by years of hurt and disbelief. This course triggered something in me that was lost; the motivation to tell my story.

I had given up on writing even a personal journal and this course has provided me with the motivation and hope to share my story with the world.

I would recommend, without a single hesitation, Australian Writers' Centre to my friends and colleagues.

I have been writing memoirs but they lack interest and have no "life" in them. I now know how to insert my own felt experience into the story rather than just chronicling events.

Charlotte was a great tutor, providing rich and constructive feedback along the way. I am now inspired to keep going on my journey to writing a children's picture book and will enrol in the Masterclass.

To be honest, I completely underestimated the complexity of writing a children's picture book and now understand how tricky it really is.

It was fun and brought my creative side to life. It was also good to read the suggested books again and to read the other student's work.

I wanted to build my confidence and know-how in presenting to kids. I recently secured a publishing deal for my debut middle-grade book (signed as a trilogy!) and want to prepare for presentations in the future. I saw this as a way of investing in myself and my future, and upskilling where I thought I needed it.

I enjoyed how it was broken down into easy-to-watch/listen segments, but still very detailed where I came away armed with tonnes of practical tips and knowledge. The ways book presentations (online and offline), launches, signings, and every interaction all feed together as part of your profile/career.

I feel better prepared as I move to 'published author' zone!

I would say it's easy to complete (bite-sized info), but filled with great tips, valuable examples, and well-presented.
