What’s it like to learn with AWC?

I have recently finished the first draft (although many drafts for the first half) of the first book in my story and this course has been so beneficial in helping me develop the world and characters further before I continue with further drafts. I had planned basic structural changes for the second draft before I started the course, but if it wasn't for the exercises and videos, I wouldn't know the world and characters as deeply as I do know. It has helped me organise things properly. It also helped develop the plot further, see plot holes, things that don't make sense and avoided things that I may have found many drafts later.

The videos have been terrific and a good length. Pamela's explanations have been interesting and thought provoking. The addition of writing examples has also been beneficial. I am now looking for them more in my own reading.

I loved watching Pamela's videos and the way she explains things. I enjoyed the humor and fun of writing which came through. It is easy to take things too seriously doing a course and then an example comes up like getting torn apart by dragons and being brought back in a bag in many pieces. It fosters the creativity we had in childhood which is so easy to lose in adulthood.

Pamela's heartfelt reassurances at the end of the course were especially lovely. The Zoom calls and Facebook Group have also been great additions to meet others doing the course. I don't feel lonely! It was also enjoyable to specifically focus on Fantasy Fiction, talking about worldbuilding etc. Thank you Pamela!

It has helped greatly to deepen my relationship to the world and characters before I start the next draft. I has also helped me to be motivated and given me the tools for future writing. It has also helped be come back to being in a community of writers and has helped things seem achievable.

The content in AWC courses is exactly what needs to be there with no frills or things that aren't actually used. Everything is usable and relevant. They are easy to follow, well organised and the people are open, friendly and helpful.

I felt the need to do a short course to get myself back writing again. I was in a slump and thought that six weeks was the perfect amount of time. I didn't have the energy for the full novel course and wanted to begin another memoir.

Thank you to Valerie and to all the guests who gave their time and expertise, each one showed different aspects of their work. These videos were most interesting and relevant.

I loved each module, found them interesting and stimulating and really enjoyed reading all the submissions by each student.

Writing Module 6 was hugely emotional for me but it showed me so much of how that time in my life had been the crux for all that happened in later life. I also found out that I can make mistakes so easily and need to go over my work and read it out loud.

I often recommend Australian Writers' Centre. The tutors are always specialists in their field and each course builds another facet into the writing life. Every course I have taken with Australian Writers' Centre has been so worthwhile.

A big thank you to you all, to the staff, to Nicole who helped me when my computer froze and I couldn't get into the hub, to the other students who all have interesting stories to tell, to the guests video speakers and to Nat and Valerie for producing a very comprehensive 6 week course.

Pamela's joy and honesty make each session enjoyable and informative. The insights she shares are invaluable for a novice novel writer. Previously I'd focussed on stage plays / poetry. The novel is a different beast.

Just have a go - later drafts can change things. And remember to have fun.

I have a number of books I want to write in the creative non-fiction genre - memoir and biography. I am used to writing non-fiction as I am a scientist and science communicator, but wanted to understand the process of creative non-fiction. I am very analytical and need to understand the process and 'rules' of writing in a specific genre, which is what drove me to enrol in this particular course.

I loved the perfect balance between theory, practical examples, and exercises so students could put the theory into practice in the context of their own project(s).

It's given me the motivation to take action rather than keeping on saying, "when I write my book." The course has given me the tools I was looking for and the steps that have provided me with the structure I needed to begin and know where I was heading, and how to finish.

Creative non-fiction is a great vehicle to encourage people to learn and see that non-fiction is not the dull and boring genre that they remember from school or university. I love the opportunity creative non-fiction provides to get people excited about history and science in a way that no textbook ever could.

If you've been thinking about writing but not sure where to begin, the AWC will have a course to set you on the path to success. Success may be a published book, or just finishing a book for your own personal satisfaction. The course content is very professional, easy to understand, and with lots of practical examples and exercises that you can put into practice in your own writing project.

So much material was covered.

The final module on magic realism was the highlight. Loved the rhythm and rhyme, poetic language and other writing devices. Also the two authors for each section was a great way to see how other authors write and I particularly liked the two for the historical and final two authors chosen.

Made it clearer what path I want to take with my writing

Kate masterfully explains and shares her insights in an encouraging way. The content is complemented by beautiful artworks and contains so much depth and meaning, with challenges to skilfully put the learnings into practice.

Opened my eyes on how to use dialogue and that it doesn't only come through with words but with body language, surroundings etc.

Brilliant courses, with notes that you can go over and many examples that you can go back to if unsure.

Bernadette's online tutorials were full of valuable information and interesting. The assignments assisted in putting what you heard and learnt into practice. Mark's assignment marking was informative, constructive and insightful. They both make me look forward to investigating this possible new career into real estate copywriting.

Highly recommend as the tutors are experienced and passionate.

Pamela has vast experience and knowledge, as a writer and a tutor. Her guidance was enlightening for me. I enjoyed her wisdom for all of our stories. I was intrigued by the other classmates' story lines.

Ever since graduating, I've always had an interest in copywriting. After researching about this course and studying the course outline, I was confident that this course would give me a deep understanding on the basics of copywriting. I was looking for an affordable online course that covered essential copywriting techniques. This was the best value for money course I could find with successful industry professionals, the amount of hours it required each week was achievable, and it was important for me to receive feedback on my assignments. It was a bonus that it touched on subjects like SEO too.

Mark was a god tutor, he explained his reasonings behind his feedback and took the time to go through each submission well.

Bernadette was well spoken and explained everything in detail, simplifying information to make it easier to consume. Information was given step-by-step in a logical order, so the last assignment was a good way to wrap up all the learnings from the past 4 weeks.

I have always loved writing, but I have been feeling stuck lately with getting anywhere writing a novel in full. I have started many ideas and have struggled to get them off the ground.
