Course updated for Scrivener 3!

2 Hours to Scrivener Power with Natasha Lester

2 Hours is all you need to transform the way you research and write

  • Are you frustrated with writing your book in Word and wish there was a way to easily move scenes around and allow you to experiment with your story?
  • Would you like a system to keep your writing ideas, notes, drafts and research materials all in one place?
  • Would you like to easily be able to see an overview or outline of your book?
  • If you answered ‘yes’ to any of these questions, this course is for you!
Scrivener is a powerful and easy-to-use program that has become a must-have for authors and long-form writers all over the world. Whether you are writing an epic fantasy or non-fiction book, Scrivener is ideal because it has been custom-built for authors. Many authors will only write their manuscripts in Scrivener – instead of Word – because it’s so much easier to arrange information, move around chapters, develop characters and plot your work.

Does this sound like you? Perhaps you …

  • have heard of Scrivener but aren’t sure if it’s right for you
  • you’re worried it will take you as long to learn how to use Scrivener as it will to write a book
  • don’t want to waste your time and money on something that that might confuse you more than it helps you
  • have tried using Scrivener but find it overwhelming
  • aren’t sure which parts of Scrivener you need to understand to get the most out of the program
  • perhaps you feel as if you’re using only 5% of Scrivener’s power.
In this two-hour video course, you’ll learn how to use Scrivener so it can transform your writing process. Many authors find that once they understand how to use the program’s essential features, it helps their creativity flow. Sure, a computer program won’t write the novel for you! But it will make the process a whole lot easier. This course is all about showing you which parts of Scrivener are the most important for you to learn to make your writing process faster, more enjoyable and more efficient.

“I found the convenience and flexibility of learning at my own pace very enjoyable.
Before enrolling in this course I attempted to use Scrivener's tutorial and found it overwhelming.
Don't waste time phaffing about trying to figure out Scrivener on your own. Just do it!”

– Anne Hayes

In this course, you’ll receive:

  • tips on how to become a faster, more efficient and more organised writer;
  • step by step video instructions at your fingertips;
  • downloadable worksheets with screenshots and written instructions;
  • demonstrations with an actual in-progress novel – no dummy text here!
  • and much more.

This updated version of the 2 Hours to Scrivener Power course uses the new Scrivener 3. If you have an older version of Scrivener, we recommend making sure you’ve upgraded to Scrivener 3 before you start this course as many of the menu items are different between versions. Plus, we cover many of Scrivener’s super-useful new features in the course including the threaded corkboard which allows you to keep track of individual story threads, subplots or timeframes; the linguistic focus which helps you overview the kind of language you are using (or overusing!); the centred outliner which helps you build your manuscript up from an outline or create an outline from your manuscript; plus project and document bookmarks which are a new and very handy new way of managing and quickly accessing your research documents and images.

“I'm kicking myself for not doing it sooner! It was fantastic. Although I've used Scrivener for a couple of projects,
I knew I wasn't using it to its full potential. Now, after just two hours, I am blown away
at how many useful features it has, and how it's going to be an absolute game changer for my writing process.
Natasha delivers the course in a manner that is concise and easy to follow. She shows you the basics
and then moves towards more advanced features without overwhelming you with unnecessary detail.”

– Jodi Gibson

Who is this course for?
This course is for anyone that would like to streamline and organise their writing process. If you’re in the process of writing a novel, screenplay, or any other long-form creative work, this is for you.
What’s NOT covered?
This course focuses purely on the most important features you should use to streamline your writing. There is much, much more to the program, but this course will cover the essentials so you can get writing with confidence.
Do you need to purchase Scrivener to do the course?
The good news is that you can use the free trial version of Scrivener to do the course. The trial version has the full functionality of Scrivener and gives you 30 days of use. Or you can purchase Scrivener here.
Do you teach with the Mac or Windows version of Scrivener?
Natasha uses Scrivener on a Mac so all of her videos feature Scrivener on a Mac. Therefore, Mac users are fully catered for in this course. We still believe Windows users can get a lot out of the course. Many of the functions and menu items are the same across both versions. Also, because Natasha teaches you how a writer can use Scrivener to write a book, not just the technical functionality of the program, much of the course is relevant no matter which operating system you are using.
What if I’ve already started writing my book in Word?
In just a couple of minutes (or less!) you can easily import your Word document into Scrivener. One of the course videos shows you how to do this.
“Before I started The Jade Lily, I knew that it was based during the Second World War. I did the 2 Hours to Scrivener Power course through the Australian Writers’ Centre. The kinds of books I write have a dual time frame. Scrivener really helped me map those dates. I could colour code these, so it was very clear. I found Scrivener very useful for laying out the line of my plot.”

– Kirsty Manning, author of The Jade Lily

How our “self-paced courses” work

This is one of AWC’s 20+ “self-paced” online courses. But what does that mean? Allow us to explain:

What’s included in your online course?

  • 2 hours of content – access anytime at your own pace
  • 7 video lessons plus 6 supporting handouts

Who is presenting this course?

Natasha Lester is the award-winning author of four novels, Her Mother's Secret, A Kiss from Mr Fitzgerald, If I Should Lose You and What is Left Over, After. Fed up with using Word to keep everything organised, she decided to get familiar with Scrivener – and hasn’t looked back! Knowing how much easier it is to learn with real-life examples, Natasha created 2 Hours to Scrivener Power using her work in progress novel. In between writing novels and looking after her three children, Natasha writes poems, short stories and essays, which have appeared in journals such as Overland and Wet Ink.
“This course is a great resource to get you properly started on Scrivener. While Scrivener rocks, it takes some time to master. The videos and handouts are easy to work through and a great resource afterwards.

– Pip Brennan
