Selecting the winners for the Best Australian Blogs Competition 2012 was a very difficult task for the judging panel and the team at the Sydney Writers' Centre in Milsons Point. There were hundreds of blogs that deserved to be finalists, and many that could have won. The challenge is comparing blogs that have very different styles, voices, content and goals. Ultimately the winners were selected based on how well they were achieving the voice and goals they were aiming for.
The overall winner of the 2012 competition is Eden Riley for her blog Edenland. Eden was the winner of the Personal/Lifestyle category which had 526 entries.
Eden's blog was a stand-out because of her moving writing, fearless honesty and her ability to forge and sustain connections with her readers. Eden's blog shares insights and experiences in a way that only a blog can. We're thrilled to announce a winner who is pushing the boundaries of blogging and writing in Australia.
"Blogging is extraordinary. Some see it as a business, an outlet, a diary, or a piece of art. The beauty is, it can be whatever you want it to be. Blogging has changed for me, over the past five years. My blog has actually helped shape my identity.
"I write about my ridiculous childhood, being a mother, a stepmother, a recovering alcoholic and drug addict, my stepfather's suicide .. all of it. I'm not afraid of telling the truth. It's liberating beyond belief .. and I see that people are responding to that. I have some of the most wonderful, caring, REAL blog readers in the world. Blown away by their words and wisdom. It's like we've built Edenland up together. It's the coolest thing I've ever done.
"We live in such an airbrushed, politically correct and "safe" world. I'm completely comfortable writing on the internet about the dark side to life. People respond fiercely. So I make an effort to keep pushing myself and my boundaries, asking questions and punching the world."
We're proud to announce the following category winners:

Personal/Lifestyle category judge Marina Go on Edenland:
"I fell in love with the writing. It's a highly personal blog that sucks
the reader right into its heart with its raw honesty
and emotion.
Eden Riley is a gifted writer who chronicles her personal highs
and lows in a way in which
we are forced to
give a damn.
I
couldn't stop reading her blog."

Parenting category judge Brenda Gaddi on Caro & Co:
"Caro & Co is an engaging, visually appealing and highly
passionate blog. It has a warm and down to earth tone. The
author's passion in helping our kids connect to the many
wonders of the outdoors comes across quite distinctly. The
site's cleverly designed homepage makes it
extremely easy
for the readers to find and search for content, a major
win for a time-poor reader like myself."
The Story of Telling

Business category judge Robert Gerrish on The Story of Telling:
"Here's a blog that succeeds brilliantly in balancing the
expertise of the blogger with valuable, original, engaging
content. Arresting headlines, considered imagery and a
clearly nurtured and active readership make The Story of
Telling a blog that's easy to get into and hard to escape.
One of the commenters on the blog likens Bernadette Jiwa
to 'a female Seth Godin' and I have to agree. A terrific
example of a business blog that must do so much for the author's business.

incredible commitment, dedication and passion for her
