Perfect your story

Life Writing Masterclass is an advanced or extension course for those who have already done the Life Writing course with Australian Writers’ Centre presenter Patti Miller, or have made a substantial start on their own.

While the fundamentals of writing autobiography or memoir need to be already understood to take part in this course, it does offer a refresher on writing skills such as how to create the texture of lived experience on the page and explores narrating voice and storytelling.

There will be a special trouble-shooting class on narrative structure and we will explore the challenging borderlands where memoir meets with fiction.

I learnt so much, was encouraged to keep going, and broke through barriers in a supportive environment. Go do it! You will love and benefit from the experience.

- Derice McDonald

You will uncover:

  • narrating position and perspective
  • the phenomenon of “Proustian memory”
  • how to deal with difficulties in “telling the truth”
  • how to trick the senses into giving the reader the colour, feel and texture of your life
  • the difference between memoir and fiction
  • how to avoid self-indulgent writing
  • how to shape your memoir
  • how to find the real story of your life.

Workshop your writing

During the course, participants will produce a full chapter to be workshopped in class and will also complete many shorter writing exercises. This is a course for people who are committed to continuing with their memoir or autobiography to learn and workshop in an encouraging and supportive environment.

The AWC methodology

We truly believe that every person needs to tap into their own creative intuition. It’s YOUR ideas and imagination that will make your stories unique – and find your voice in your writing. However, we also know there are clear frameworks and techniques that will make you a better writer. AWC’s methodology will equip you with the right tools and skills you need, but also show you how to harness the creative process and tap into your own innate talents.

If you want to be a writer, find the course that suits you and Australian Writers' Centre will make sure you achieve your goal. They are as committed to making you a success.
